Arthur and Beverly* were on their second marriage, to each other. Their first marriage had ended early. However, after years had passed and the couple had grown close, Arthur proposed to Beverly (again). She accepted, and their second marriage was a fairy tale come true. Then, tragedy struck. One afternoon, Beverly collapsed on the golf course. She died five days later.

Now a widower, Arthur wanted to do something to honour his wife’s legacy of generosity. Giving back had always been important to the couple. He wanted to create a foundation in her name, so that his family and friends could participate too. However, the complexity of the task soon weakened his enthusiasm.

A friend referred Arthur to a gift planning consultant at Abundance Canada. The consultant suggested a Flexible Gifting Account that can be used as a family foundation. This is a unique donor-advised fund that allows Arthur and his family to make donations at any time, and to disburse the funds to the charities of their choice. It provides many of the benefits of a private foundation, without the burden or expense of registering and operating a separate charity.

Every year on Beverley’s birthday, Arthur and his children gather to toast her memory and to discuss which causes they will support. Beverley’s legacy of giving continues to bring the family together to laugh and reminisce, and they all take great joy helping others in her honour.

Since 1974, Abundance Canada has helped Canadians connect their resources and values with their philanthropy, by providing customizable giving solutions to support the causes they care about, during their lifetime and through their estate.
