Devour! The Food Film Fest

Since its inception in 2009, Devour! The Food Film Fest has grown to the point where it is now the largest annual event in Wolfville and Kings County, recognized as a signature event by the province of Nova Scotia and considered widely as the world’s largest food film festival.

In 2016, Devour! organizers produced 94 unique events over five days including 80 new food and wine films, 24 workshops, 20 tasting tours, and 20 dinners, parties and events. The 7th edition of the festival will take place from October 25–29, 2017 and will remain similar in scope and scale in terms of its overall offerings, along with some exciting new additions.

Notable celebrities and chefs that have participated in Devour! in the past include: Anthony Bourdain, Bill Pullman, Jason Priestley, Chuck Hughes, Michael Städtlander, Dominique Crenn and Bob Blumer.

This year’s overall festival theme is A Celebration of Canadian Cinema & Cuisine in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday and Devour! is shining a spotlight on Canadian film and food content. Last year, 30% of Devour!’s film program was from Canada. This year, the aim is to maintain it at that level or increase it. The festival will also be inviting some of Canada’s top chefs to collaborate with some of our region’s best.

Within this theme, Devour! will kick off with an Opening Night Gala Evening: Canadian film icon Gordon Pinsent will open the festival as its guest curator this year.

The festival theme will culminate with a Saturday Spotlight Gala Evening that will have chefs from across Canada prepare a multiple-course meal inspired by a gala film in the festival’s program.

Another fun theme at this year’s event will see Devour! reinforcing the natural ties between Scotland and Nova Scotia. As one of the largest ethnic groups in the East Coast and amongst the first Europeans to settle in Canada, the Scots have had a long-term impact on our culture since colonial times. With increased interest and improved direct travel access, there’s even more reason to celebrate our many linkages especially via some very talented chefs. Three Scottish chefs will team up with three Nova Scotia chefs to prepare one of Devour!’s gala dinners.

Devour! will host culinary students from coast-to-coast as part of its on-going partnership with Nova Scotia Community College’s Culinary Arts and Tourism Management programs and newer partnership with George Brown Culinary school. In 2016, instructors and students from George Brown attended and took part in Devour! and in 2017 Devour! will be joined by The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver.
