Tourism Jasper

For those looking to experience a star studded evening in the quaint mountain town of Jasper, Alberta, look no further than the fourth annual Dark Sky Fest.

Making its returns to Jasper from October 25-27, 2013 – locals and visitors alike will gather to marvel at a spectacular show unfolding in the skies.
Officially recognized by The Royal Astronomical Society as a Dark Sky Preserve, Jasper National Park is proud to offer some of the World’s best starlight viewing; a true stargazer’s playground.

Under the immerse vastness of Jasper’s dark skies, amateur and pro astronomers of all ages come together to take in nature’s star attractions – and if they are lucky, maybe even witness a visit by the famed Northern Lights! Envision an expansive outdoor cinema screen of bright lights and billions of stars and you’re half way there. This captivating look at the cosmos is one you’ll never forget.

Professional star-seekers and experienced astronomers are on hand throughout the festival to give their expert ‘how-to’ advice on the prime viewing spots and give you pointers on exactly what to watch out for.

Firm favorites of the Fest will be back, including the much-loved night sky tour around Pyramid Island, ‘Starlight Adventure’, ‘Dinner with the Stars’, ‘Star Grazing’ on horseback for all the family, a series of ‘Astronomy Talks’, lessons on capturing the night sky on camera with acclaimed photographer Yuichi Takasaka and the TELUS World of Science Planetarium.

In addition, some of the biggest names in the world of stargazing will return, including the Daily Planet’s Jay Ingram and the Festival’s Resident Sky Guy, Peter McMahon.

Added for 2013 is a brand-new, out-of-this-world starwatching experience you won’t want to miss. Join a group of pro-astronauts on Lake Annette for a unique chance to look even deeper into the skies with a top-of-the-range telescope!

Plus, visitors who are interested in venturing a little further, the area around the Columbia Icefields, just outside of Jasper, is an incredible place to peer into the darkest skies in the Northern Hemisphere.
